Heath High School’s Theater Guild Presents “CAROUSEL” – A Triumph of Nostalgia and Talent

Heath, TX – In an exciting and surprise announcement at the Thespian Banquet in May 2023, Director Keeli James and her production team unveiled their ambitious project for the school year – the timeless musical, “Carousel.” This classic piece of musical history, originally produced by The Theater Guild and written by the legendary duo Rodgers & Hammerstein, is set to captivate audiences at the Heath High School Performing Arts Center on January 25, 26, and 27.

The auditions for “Carousel” kicked off in mid-October, and with over 100 students from Rockwall Heath High School (RHHS) forming the cast, crew, and orchestra, the production promises to be a spectacular showcase of talent. Director Keeli James emphasized the significance of exposing her students to musical theater classics, expressing the importance of understanding the roots of the art form.

“I want my students to understand where musical theatre actually began. Many of them are mostly familiar with contemporary shows written after 1960 and not with the classics that I grew up watching as a child like ‘The Sound of Music.’ Anyone who loves the music in that show will be enamored with this powerful and moving musical score,” says James.

Despite facing an unfortunate setback with their Tech Director, Matt Pelletier, who had just closed a sold out run of their fall play, suffered an unexpected medical condition that has kept him out for much of the production process, the show must go on. With the dedication of parent volunteers and advanced tech students, Pelletier’s set designs are coming to life. Each rock, clam, dock, and more were hand-constructed by the students, Booster Members, and parent volunteers.

Adding to the excitement, the production boasts the participation of guest artist Lorne Liechty, former Mayor of Heath, who will be playing the roles of Starkeeper and Dr. Seldon. Liechty, a fellow thespian and avid supporter of fine arts in Rockwall County, brings a unique touch to the performance.

Rockwall Heath High School Theatre has a strong legacy of excellence, with recent achievements in UIL Varsity OAP and musical productions like “Beauty & the Beast,” which earned a nomination for ‘Most Outstanding Student Orchestra.’ This year’s production promises to enchant the audience with its passerelle stage, an eight-minute carnival scene, and visually stunning elements like real carousel horses.

Director Keeli James emphasizes the universal themes of love and redemption in “Carousel.” Drawing parallels with last year’s production, “Beauty & the Beast,” she notes the presence of darkness, light, humor, and hope. The story revolves around a woman’s unconditional love for her husband, showcasing the strength that can help define one’s future.

“A happy dressing room is a happy show, and we have one happy cast of kids ready to share their gifts, create the magic, and tell the story. ‘Carousel’ is a beautiful story of love and redemption,” says James.

With enchanting melodies such as “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” the audience is in for a treat. The performances are scheduled for January 25, 26, and 27 at the Heath High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets and the cast list can be found on www.heathhawktheatrecompany.com. Don’t miss this visually stunning and family-friendly production that promises to be a highlight of the Heath High School theatrical calendar.
